Stairs School Football Leagueconcludes with a glittering award ceremony at the JawaharLalNehru Stadium


India’s largest school level football league was organized by NGO Stairs with support of Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, Department of Education (DoE) NCT, Uflex Ltd. and Sports Authority of India 

India’s biggest school-level football initiative- the Stairs School Football League (SSFL) concluded with a glittering awards ceremony at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi today. The award ceremony was attended by Hon’ble Member of Parliament Ms.MeenakshiLekhi and Mr.Ajit M. Sharan, Sports Secretary, Government of India. They presented the awards to the winning team and also shared their perspective on importance of sports at school level.

Mr. Siddhartha Upadhyay, Secretary General, Stairs said: “The first instalment of SSFL has concluded today and this is only the beginning. We created this platform to bring all the stakeholders together to create football champions for the country. The first edition has been a huge success and in coming editions we will be including following many more international guidelines, rules. I want to thank all the dignitaries present who have come in for the love of the sport and have given us immense encouragement. My special thanks to Mr.Ajit M. Sharan, Sports Secretary, Government of India for his personal involvement and constant support in our endeavour leading us to success.”

“I want to congratulate each and every person related to the league who shared in our dream of taking school football to grassroots levels in an organized championship format. We are extremely proud to have to have hosted this league and making a solid beginning. We want to thank our partners Uflex Ltd, DoE (NCT) and the German Embassy for their immense support and encouragement. I would also like to commend all the teams and kids who have participated in this league braving the Delhi winters. The enthusiasm and the talent we have witnessed has been tremendous and we are now more driven for our 2015 edition,” addedMr.Upadhyay.

The extremely jubilant winning team’s were handed the trophies by the dignitaries present. Certificate of participation were also awarded to all the participating schools.

Organized by Stairs and partnered by Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, Department of Education (DoE) NCT, UFlex Ltd. and Sports Authority of India the SSFL was kicked off at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi on December 1st, 2014.The Stairs SFL in its first edition had 128 schools participating from Delhi. The schools were shortlisted amongst 500 entries received for the league.

Every team played at least 3 matches. A total of 256 matches were played during the tournament in adherence to the FIFA guidelines. The matches were spread over a span of 23 days with the final matches being held today.

The league intends to develop a well-organized grass root youth development program, through an organised championship league, which will be committed towards structured professional training. This will also allow access to football to the children in their own environment. The idea of this league is that every enthusiastic boy between the age group of 14-17 gets an opportunity to play competitively.

The first edition of the league was limited to the Delhi region. However, Stairs will be taking it further to six other states in its next edition in 2015.
